"The only upshot of such complaints is that I may unfortunately have a lot more time available for my substack reports… but whether my family will eat and pay its bills is another matter". Is it asking too much that your employers are mature and reasonable people who measure your worth by the work you do at the university? Probably not. Norman Finkelstein, the Jewish anti-Zionist historian, said recently that he has never had a recognised full time paid job - due to his principled stances. It would appear that you come from the same mould as Norman, I wish there were more like you and he.
I am a professional layman when it comes to much of what you write, legal and medical. I can't pretend to understand much at all. But this layman can see that fourteen world class expert neonatologists trump a Welsh (non-neonatologist) paediatrician who in all probability - much like the police - looked for a crime, didn't approach things with an unbiased eye. Why indeed would he do other, there were professional men making accusations.
Are there adequate words to describe all those responsible for the conviction of Lucy Letby? I cannot think of any.
Much respect for you Norman and your allegiance with Scott over the Lucy Letby case. I certainly don't want to divert attention from the Lucy Letby case so will say no more.
Thanks and for your podcasts I know a great deal work involved. I just wrote my latest article on Lucy case because I noticed Ranitidine on thematic review, can you give me an opinion as to whether Ranitidine could have contributed to death of Baby C and baby E, would be v grateful for your opinion as a medic. https://callystarforth.substack.com/p/ranitidine-babies-c-and-e
Ranitidine is an interesting one. I have seen guidelines by consultants suggesting it should be given to babies with repeated reflux to reduce stomach acid and 'burping' up milk... but at the same time babies who receive it are up to twice as likely to experience a nosocomial infection (a *real* issue at CoCH) and to develop sepsis and die from NEC (see studies like this one: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5450121/)
yes , it is ... there are some studies out there which do seem to reflect that and it has been withdrawn in USA and UK since 2020/21. I noticed that COCH had question marked it (along with pre-eclampsia) on the thematic review. THey must have considered it but they are not gonna highlight anything that might have risked those babies ... tbh there were so many things that could have killed those babies given the appalling state of that neonatal unit not sure isolating one cause will be possible in all the babies ...
Ranitidine was discontinued due to issues with production and patient safety due to impurities which may be carcinogenic. They also brought out much more expensive drugs in the same class to replace it. https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/ranitidine/
Oh shit. Here we go, the police are now moving ahead on corporate manslaughter and individual gross negligence manslaughter investigations at the Countess of Cheshire hospital. Great timing - are they short of stuff to do?
I see you saw the correction. I had been looking at Child E and Child F (as they were twins and Child E died while Child F survived) and switching between screens (brain on auto pilot). While someone else suggested to me I should write my articles in ChatGPT or PerplexityAI to prevent such things I am completely against such things... I would rather spend the time to do the analysis and write-up myself and occassionally stub my own toe than to give it to a computer and watch as the computer hallucinates things that were never there
You are correct... I have corrected that one word near the end where I put "died" from poor medical practice instead of 'suffered' from... (brain on autopilot)Thanks :-)
No worries, great work. Great credit to you and Norman for sticking your heads above the parapet so early on in this gross miscarriage and banging on about it until folks began to listen.
I only wish all the mainstream meadia folks who are hopping on the bandwagon and claiming to have taken the lead on this had been capable of standing up with people like Richard Gill and myself when we started down this road 18-24 months ago. I can only think of the time and momentum that was lost by not having more public people on board back then.
And notable journalists like The Guardian's Polly Toynbee, headline "Faced with evil like Lucy Letby’s, we yearn for a rational explanation. Sometimes there is none", except for the fact she was entirely innocent. Broadsheet journalists became tabloid journalists overnight. Lazy and unforgivably joining the mob take on things. Scott, Richard Gill, and Peter Elston had to do the journalistic digging and take us to where we are now. Forgive my French, fuck you Toynbee, fuck you, all of you who with pen in hand allowed the establishment to victimise an innocent young woman.
Thank you for the work you did to highlight this bizarre case to us all.
It is hard to believe this could happen in 21st century England.
Let's hope for a positive outcome. Now that the establishment has been exposed for what they are, they will surely close ranks.
There must be consequences for the police, defence team and judge.

Please don't compare the ignorant, obsessive Israel hater and academic fraud Finkelstein with Scott.

1,000 years ago you would have been a saint.
more power to you, sir.

Great piece. I hope the work situation eases.
Did Baby F die. I thought both the "insulin" babies survived?

Just checking, but I thought both ‘insulin cases’ survived. If so then a minor edit is in order. Otherwise that’s a great article. Thanks
